๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’› Subaru Goes Back to Blue & Gold โ€“ Meet the New WRX GD25

Subaru has just unveiled something that should get plenty of Subaru fans talkingโ€ฆ

Meet the 2027 Subaru WRX GD25. ๐Ÿš™๐Ÿ’จ

Unveiled at Boxerfest 2026, the new limited-edition WRX has been created to celebrate 25 years of the WRX in the United States โ€“ and Subaru has gone right back to its roots for the inspiration.

World Rally Blue.
Gold wheels.
Manual gearbox.
Big carbon wing.

Now that sounds more like a Subaru! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ What Does GD25 Mean?

The name GD25 isn't random.

When the WRX officially arrived in the US in 2002, it used the GD chassis code โ€“ a generation that has since become one of the most recognizable shapes in Subaru history.

The 25 celebrates 25 years since that introduction.

Rather than simply adding a badge and calling it an anniversary edition, Subaru has included quite a few nods to its performance and rally heritage.

๐Ÿ’™ World Rally Blue & Gold Are Back

Perhaps the first thing you'll notice is the colour combination.

Every GD25 will be finished in World Rally Blue and fitted with gold 19-inch alloy wheels.

For Subaru enthusiasts, there probably isn't a more iconic combination.

Behind those wheels sit uprated Brembo brakes with gold-painted calipers, while Bridgestone Potenza S007 performance tyres help put everything onto the road.

It's unmistakably Subaru โ€“ and we have to admit, we're very happy to see blue and gold taking centre stage again.

๐Ÿชฝ And Look at THAT Wingโ€ฆ

This might be our favourite part.

Sitting on the back is an STI dry-carbon-fibre swan-neck rear wing.

And it isn't just there for show.

The wing is the same component used on Travis Pastrana's WRX ARA25L rally car.

Under the bonnet Subaru has also fitted an STI flexible strut tower bar, while the suspension gets stiffer springs and revised damping.

So although this isn't a new STI, Subaru certainly hasn't forgotten about the people who enjoy actually driving their cars.

โš™๏ธ What About the Engine?

Here's where opinions might become a little more dividedโ€ฆ

Under the bonnet is Subaru's 2.4-litre turbocharged BOXER engine producing 271 hp.

It's paired exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox, complete with an STI short shifter, and of course Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

But there's no extra power for the GD25.

Considering this is a special model celebrating 25 years of WRX, we suspect there will be plenty of Subaru fans who wish Subaru had turned things up a little.

Would an extra 30, 40 or even 50 horsepower have made this feel like the anniversary WRX we've all been waiting for?

Possiblyโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ‘€

๐Ÿช‘ Inside the GD25

The special treatment continues inside with Recaro performance seats featuring black Ultrasuede inserts and red contrast stitching.

There's also an STI shift knob to go with the short-shift manual gearbox.

It's relatively subtle compared with the exterior, but definitely keeps the driver-focused feel we'd want from a special WRX.

๐Ÿ”ข Only 350 Will Be Made

Here's the bad news.

Subaru is producing just 350 WRX GD25s, with reservations due to begin in the US before deliveries in summer 2027.

At the moment, this is a Subaru of America anniversary model, rather than something announced for the UK.

Which is a shame because we think there would be more than a few people over here interested in one!

๐Ÿ”ง The FflatFour Take

We love seeing Subaru embracing its heritage again.

World Rally Blue and gold wheels immediately take you back to the Subaru many of us grew up loving, while the manual gearbox, Brembos, suspension upgrades and that incredible carbon wing show that Subaru still understands its enthusiast following.

Butโ€ฆ

271 hp?

That's probably the bit we'd change.

For a car celebrating 25 years of WRX performance, we'd have loved to see Subaru give the boxer engine some extra power and make the GD25 feel even more special.

And it raises an even bigger questionโ€ฆ

Is Subaru testing the waters for something else? ๐Ÿ‘€

We've been waiting for a proper successor to the WRX STI for years.

Could cars like the GD25 be a sign that Subaru is beginning to put more focus back onto its performance heritage?

We certainly hope so.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What Do You Think?

We want to hear from the Subaru community.

Would you buy a WRX GD25 if Subaru offered it in the UK?

And more importantlyโ€ฆ

Has Subaru done enough, or should a 25th-anniversary WRX have been given more power?
